Democracy Dies in DarknesscourseBreakfastStart CookingComment on this storyAdd to your saved recipesBy Stephanie Witt Sedgwick

This baked French toast stuffed and topped with a simple strawberry sauce is an easy-to-assemble crowd pleaser.

You may have sauce left over, which is good spooned atop yogurt and swirled into hot oatmeal.

Storage: Refrigerate the sauce in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Directions

  • Step 1

Make the sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the strawberries, water and sugar. Partially cover and cook just until the berries have defrosted, then uncover and cook until the fruit has softened and the liquid is gently simmering, 20 to 25 minutes.

  • Step 2

In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice and cornstarch until smooth, and add to the strawberries. Bring again to a simmer and remove from the heat. Let cool for about 15 minutes.

  • Step 3

Using a fork, mash the cooked berries against the side of the pot until you get a slightly chunky sauce. Stir in the vanilla and almond extracts, taste and add more sugar, if desired. Let cool completely.

  • Step 4

Make the French toast: Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees. Generously grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with butter.

  • Step 5

Arrange 6 slices of the bread in the baking dish to form an even layer (if your slices are large, it's okay if they overlap a bit). Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of the sugar over the bread. Spoon about 3/4 cup of the sauce evenly over the first layer. Arrange the remaining 6 slices of bread on top of the sauce.

  • Step 6

In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and vanilla until well mixed, then pour over the assembled French toast. Let it sit for 5 minutes, or until most of the milk-egg mixture has been absorbed. Sprinkle the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar over the top, and top with a little sparkling sugar and cinnamon, if using. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the French toast looks set and lightly browned.

  • Step 7

Serve hot, with the remaining sauce for spooning over each portion.
